Walla Walla sits in the southeastern corner of Washington, tucked up against the Blue Mountains not far from the Oregon line. It is wheat country and wine country both — a valley of vineyards and grain fields, known well beyond the state for its sweet onions and for a historic downtown that still belongs to the people who live here.

It is a place that pays attention to what it makes. Whitman College keeps the streets busy, the tasting rooms fill through harvest, and somewhere in the middle of all of it there is a small bakery on Birch Street doing the same thing every week.

That suits us. We bake in small batches, by hand, for people who live a few blocks away — and we would rather make a little of something good than a lot of something ordinary.
